Bilingual Legal Clinic

“We have seen other legal glossaries, even those in English and Korean. However, there were no specific ones for legal services and the system in Ontario. So we thought about building one ourselves for our own use and that of our partner organizations with similar demographics. The Windsor-Essex Bilingual Legal Clinic offers free legal advice to low-income residents of Windsor and Essex County. The service is available in English and French. “We only received our requests by e-mail. We would therefore communicate with the questions by email and give them recommendations or summary legal advice. However, we know that some people prefer to meet in person, which gives them more comfort. Chun says a massive increase in inquiries has been received since April, and the clinic received the 2022 Social Justice Award from the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers. The Korean Legal Clinic was founded in 2019 by a team of Korean lawyers when it was determined that there was no Korean and English legal clinic in Ontario.

In addition to language and cultural barriers and differences, Chun says 33% of Koreans living in Canada face financial hardship, which contributes to limited access to legal services reinforced by other barriers as immigrants. The draft will be completed by the end of the summer, and Chun says the glossary will be updated regularly so that the clinic and partner organizations can make good use of it. Korean Legal Clinic is developing a bilingual legal glossary that focuses on family law, immigration law and landlord-tenant disputes to overcome the cultural and language barrier Koreans face in understanding Ontario`s legal process, said Jiwon Chun, Director General and Immigration Lawyer.
